Weekly roundup

The beauty of the FA cup has definitely been on show this weekend with the top 3 in the Premier League all bowing out of the competition and 4th place earning a replay at home. Chelsea became the latest team to find out 2-0 is the worse score line in football when they lost 4-2 at home to Bradford City. Manchester City also lost at home to Middlesbrough; maybe the trip away this week was not the best idea. Southampton who are 3rd lost to an inform Palace whilst Manchester United drew at Cambridge on Friday night. Swansea also went out away at Blackburn and Tottenham lost at home to bottom of the league Leicester. Aston Villa and Arsenal both squeaked out close wins.

The Australian Open is about to enter its second week without Roger Federer. Andy Murray beat Grigor Dimitrov to set up a quarter-final match against Australia’s Nick Kyrgios.

England posted just over 300 on Friday against Australia, but another inspired innings by Steve Smith helped the Aussies over the line. England needs to somehow get their bowling and batting to work together on the same day. One day the bowling is good and the batting isn’t and then it can change in the next game. Congratulations to Ian Bell who has become England’s all-time leading run scorer in one day internationals.

Amir Khan and Manny Pacquiao are both waiting for a decision from Floyd Mayweather as to who he will fight next. Both have been seen together recently in London to discuss a possible bout if they both fail to get a fight with Mayweather. Kell Brook is taking a bit of flak from so called boxing fans over his first defence. He has decided to take on his mandatory challenger who is Jo Jo Dan. Now Kell does not run the IBF so how can so called fans get on at him for taking a fight he has to take. Mandatory means he has to take it otherwise he will be stripped of his belt. Yes he possibly could have had a voluntary first but he has just come back from an injury that could have ended his career so a bit of slack would be nice.

Across the pond

NFL and the story of the under inflated balls will not go away. Is there really something to this story or has the press overinflated it.  Both Bill Belichick and Tom Brady knew nothing of it. Well it’s not the first controversy to come out that involves the Patriots. What I don’t get and what some have said is that surley he could feel if the ball was deflated. A footballer (soccer player) who uses their foot can tell when a ball needs more air and surely a hand is more sensitive than a foot since you are actually gripping it. I will in the week come back to this story and cheating in sport. NBA and Atlanta are on a 15 game winning streak and lead the East by 7 games. Bigger news is that the Knicks won 3 in a row before losing last night to Charlotte. In the West Golden State lead by 5 games whilst the Lakers are on a 7 game losing streak.
