Tom Werner recently spoke about the Red Sox’ decision to part ways with Don Orsillo, and his explanation wasn’t really much of an explanation at all.

“I think when the opportunity to bring Dave (O’Brien) aboard came to us, after a lot of thought we decided, you know what, he’s one of the premier broadcasters in the country and we thought he’d be a great addition to the team.

“I understand it has created some controversy,” Werner said. “And I also understand that Don is a great broadcaster, but we felt that starting next year it was worth going in a different direction reenergizing the broadcast. And when the opportunity presented itself to bring Dave O’Brien to NESN, we just felt after a great deal of thought and consideration that was the right decision to make.”

Is there anyone within the Red Sox organization that is more out of touch with the fans than Tom Werner?  I don’t think there is one person in all of Red Sox Nation who thought that the broadast needed to be “reenergized”.  If ratings are down this year it’s because the team has sucked, plain and simple.  If you want to reenergize the broadcast then start by reenergizing the front office and the pitching staff and the rest will take care of itself.  Red Sox fans love Don Orsillo.  He’s one of the best broadcasters in all of sports and I don’t care how good you think Dave O’Brien is.  There is no one on this planet that is going to take Orsillo’s job and do it better than he could.  He and Remy have a chemistry in the booth that is unrivaled in all of baseball.  So if you haven’t noticed from all of the backlash you’re getting for this, it’s safe to say that you and probably John Henry are the only ones who thought this move would be an upgrade.  In fact, the vast majority of Sox fans would rather see you two clueless asshats get the boot as opposed to Don.  We were all under the impression that Remy and Orsillo would the voices of the Red Sox for years to come as they have been for the last decade and a half, and we were all perfectly happy with that.  Now all of that is ruined and it’s probably because both of you greedy pricks just didn’t want to pay him the money that he deserves.

But what else is new?  As we’ve learned over the years these guys don’t know a thing about baseball or even the culture of Sox Nation.  It’s like they’re on another planet.  All the proof you need is in the infamously awkward video above that shows Werner at the Red Sox 2013 World Series parade.  The guy has been to Fenway a million times and has absolutely no clue how to start a “let’s go Red Sox” chant.

I don’t think it’s possible to be more clueless than that so it’s really no surprise that he thought letting Orsillo go was the right move.  But why he chose to disrespect someone who has done so much for the Red Sox organization by making the move during the season as opposed to after is beyond me.  Maybe they wanted to give Don more time to look for a new job but this was a bad idea no matter how you slice it.
