5-Star FSU commit, George Campbell, and the rest of East Lake High School is going down to Fort Lauderdale, Florida to face the St. Thomas Aquinas (STA) Raiders in the 7A State Semi-Finals. George Campbell, standing in at 6’4, is the #1 ranked WR in the country on ESPN, and has been simply dominant all year.

Campbell’s senior stat line, according to Maxpreps, reads like this. He has 11 rushes for 97 yards on the season, along with 880 receiving yards on 62 receptions.

This STA secondary will be a new test for Campbell. He hasn’t faced a group of defensive backs quite as talented the one he will see on Friday. I have been watching STA all year and I have even done some announcing for their games. From what I have seen, and from talking to some of the players, James Oliphant is Raiders’ best pure cover corner. The problem is that James is only 5’8 in cleats. Against a receiver as big and physical as Campbell is, that simply wouldn’t suffice. Fortunately for the Raiders, they have a very deep secondary.

The player who will be lined up across from Campbell is Damon Arnette, a 6’2 corner who is committed to South Carolina. ESPN has Arnette ranked as a 4-star recruit. I talked to a few STA defenders, nobody wanted to say too much or make any bold predictions about Campbell or the game, but they did collectively state that they felt that they have what it takes to contain George Campbell and pull off a victory at home. Safety, Tyson Cisrow had this say, “This dude is talented, but I think we can control him, and win the game.” Tyson even went on to say, “Damon will lock him down.” He also alluded to Damon’s physicality and felt that it would overwhelm George Campbell.

In an interview with Damon Arnette, I addressed the fact that he was a 4-star DB going up against the best WR in the country, and he had this to say, “It is exciting for me to go up against a guy that ESPN has as the best WR in the nation. I think of myself as one of the best defensive backs, and playing against the best will give me an opportunity to prove that.”

I am excited for STA’s most physical corner to be going up such a highly ranked WR. I really think that Damon will be able to win this battle and prove himself as one of the best DB’s in the nation.
