Jim McElwain’s sophomore year as Florida head coach may be heading towards a sophomore slump. It was already reported earlier this year that Treon Harris would be moving from quarterback to wide receiver come Spring practice. The only problem is, Harris is nowhere to be found in practice, nor is top receiver Antonio Callaway. There is no statement made on why the duo is a no show, only that both are suspended indefinitely. Here are the possible replacements for both players.

The only quarterback on the team with true experience is Purdue transfer Austin Appleby. Appleby was a two-year starter for the Boilermakers, who threw for 2,777 yards and 19 touchdowns in the three seasons at West Lafayette. Other than the departed Will Grier, no other quarterback took any snaps during the season. The only other player with brief experience is two-time transfer Luke Del Rio who played in only three games for Oregon State last year, completing eight passes for 141 yards. It was just announced yesterday that Del Rio has been granted an extra year of eligibility.

Callaway was the leading receiver and record setter for the Gators since his arrival, but McElwain may be looking for another main go to guy. Second leader Demarcus Robinson left early for the NFL, which could leave Brandon Powell to most likely be the target for Appleby, if he gets the nod this Fall. Tight end DeAndre Goolsby will take the place of Jake McGee as leader in his department. You can expect other wide receivers and tight ends to be getting plenty of playing time during the Spring and maybe Fall. (NOTE: Powell is to miss entire Spring practice due to a foot injury)

This isn’t a competition to see who’s the best, it’s a mystery to be solved to see who will be productive in Spring and during the 2016 season. The quarterback situation was pretty much solved until Grier got suspended, which showed who was best. The real question would be, who will be the next QB/WR combo for Florida?
