Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr were helping promote Batman vs Superman: Dawn Of Justice with paint schemes during the Auto Club 400 at Fontana. Johnson turned out to be the better superhero as he beat Kevin Harvick in overtime to win his second race of the year and seventh win at Fontana.
Harvick had controlled most of the race and led the most laps with 142. His second straight win was within his grasp with two laps to go until Kyle Busch blew a tire forcing overtime. Only ones who were able to contest Harvick were Martin Truex Jr and Carl Edwards, as the Joe Gibbs Racing alliance fought for the lead in certain points of the race.
Truex had the best pit stop with 10.94 seconds, which was the fastest this year for Furniture Row Racing. Joey Logano got behind Truex causing the air to be took out from behind him hitting the wall. Truex would finish 32nd after leading 31 laps, and crew chief Cole Pearn coming back from suspension voiced his displeasure. Logano later apologized for the incident and took responsibility.
Johnson extended his all time wins at Fontana to six and passes Dale Earnhardt for seventh on the all time list with 77. He earns his second win of the season and moves to second in points, but Harvick extends his points lead. Kyle ended his streak of eight straight top five finishes and fell to fifth in points.
Next week is an off week since it’s Easter, after that it’s back to the East Coast to Martinsville to the track known as “The Paperclip”. In case anyone forgot (which I seriously doubt), it was where the infamous wreck took place during the Chase last season. But I’m sure there are a lot of drivers and fans who would want to forget about that.
