Heisman Race Update 101014

bad postnot very good postgood postvery good postgreat post (3 votes, average: 4.33 out of 5)

This is where you can get an idea of who will be running towards that trophy.  Conference schedule is just beginning and the teams all have their identity.  I will list my top 5 candidates, granted only 3 make it but the Top 5 will give an idea of the possible top 3.

1. Amari Cooper

The guy reminds me of Julio Jones.  He is good size, run clean routes and cannot be guarded.  He is a magical player who has been consistent and will become a NFL Star.  First round talent who can make his quarterback look great.  Alabama is having a down year and yet because of him they are in every game.  IF he continues to have 7 or more and 120 or more stats a game, he will win the Heisman.

2. Melvin Gordon

The best Big 10 RB since Eddie George ( George is former heisman winner)  He is elusive and the only thing that will derail him is the Winconsin losses.  He has been averaging over 150 yds rushing, unless he continues to get 150 +  He should be in the discussion of winning, no doubt in my mind he will be in the final 3.

3. Dak Prescott- Nick Marshall

I rank Dak Prescott and Nick Marshall together.  They both are good passers and superior athletes on the ground running.  Last week rushing for over 100 and passing over 200 is a superior stat line for College football.  That is why Manziel and Winston won the heisman, granted they had 300-400 yd pass games.  To become in the top 3, it will depend on how their team finishes.  They are the most important part of each team, so goes the team goes the player.  SEC schedule is one of the tougher schedules, I think Marshall will beat out Prescott.

5.  Connor Halliday

I have Connor on this list just for the fact that he may break every single passing record known to man. Connor is coming off the most impressive games I have ever seen.  over 700 yds passing and 6 tds.  If a QB in a top conference has a performance like this and this isn’t the first game for him.  Thru 6 games he has 3,052 yds and 26 tds.  That is a 508 yd avg a game and 4 plus tds a game.  The record is 5,833 by BJ Symons.  Actually the top 2 QBs on this list are from Texas Tech which was coached by current Wast St coach Mike Leach.  He is on pace to surpass their numbers.

This is my top 5 list excluding Toddy Gurley (recent NCAA investigation)  I want to speak about each player and why I think they deserve the trophy.

Dan, Great post on you thoughts on the Heisman race so far. I agree with your guys you listed above. Cooper is a freak and like you said, in the same sentence as Julio Jones with his ability. Its been quite some time since a receiver has won the heisman, but this could be the year it happens IF Alabama is in the discussion at the end of the year for the Final Four. I hadn’t hear of Connor Holliday until a week ago and looking at his stats, its unbelievable. Those are even inflated numbers playing video games on easy, and he’s doing it every week! I do think Gurley was in a prime spot to take the trophy this year until his recent suspension.

If you had to predict how everything unfolds, which guy are you taking to take home the trophy?

Well obviously it all depends on team success, but I think Dak Prescott moved in front of Marshall after the game on saturday. Although Gordon is having a really good year, I still think a Wisconsin team with 2 losses already won’t make the cut. He’ll have to be even better to pass a quarterback on an undefeated SEC team. So I would have to agree with you on Prescott winning it!

Nice article Dan. I like the list. Ill agree that Dak Prescott does look pretty special right now, but its too early to give it to anybody just yet. The SEC is always tough so we shall see how he does the rest of the season.
